WOLVERTON TOWN BAND

The oldest brass band in the Milton Keynes area

THE END OF ANOTHER EVENTFUL YEAR

24 December. As another new year beckons, we must say a huge thank-you to everyone in the band and all our supporters for a great 2015.

We've had a very good year for performances and did lots of gigs to entertain the people of Wolverton and raise our profile in the town.

We wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous 2016. We look forward to playing for the people of Wolverton in the New Year.

CAROLS IN THE SQUARE, 24 DECEMBER

24 December. As is tradition, we finished the year playing carols round the Christmas tree in The Square on Christmas Eve afternoon.

CAROLING ROUND THE STREETS, DECEMBER

22 December.  The band played carols to local residents door-to-door around the streets of Wolverton on five evenings in December.

It was great to see so many people supporting their local band, with many coming out to take photos, sing along and even dance!

After our fifth and final evening stomping the streets, we finished with a few festive tunes and a pint at The Galleon pub, Old Wolverton.

13 December.  Our Christmas Concert last night was fantastic. The church was full, so much so that the Church Wardens had to bring out extra chairs! It was great to see so many people there - of all ages ranging from toddlers to senior citizens.

It was especially nice to see our youngsters and developers taking part, and everyone getting into the Christmas spirit.

The people of Wolverton really do appreciate their local band!

Thanks to everyone for making it such a success. We're so pleased everyone enjoyed themselves. More photos in the Photo Gallery.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY, 8 NOVEMBER

8 November. The band was honoured and proud to take part in the Remembrance Day parade earlier today.

The weather held off and we were spared the rain. It was good to see our Musical Director, Jane Lloyd, back in charge after a while off due to illness. Special thanks and well done to Heidi who played solo.

11 October. The band opened (at 11am) and closed (at 12 noon) at the free Roots event in the Rugby World Cup Fanzone (the temporary big blue tent in Campbell Park, Central Milton Keynes).

Roots was a showcase community arts event and we were proud and thrilled to be invited to take part.

It proved to be an exciting occasion and was the debut performance for many of our younger band members, all of whom had been practising for many weeks in the run-up to the event.

SPRING CONCERT

17 May. Following our two successful public concerts in 2014, the band held a Spring Concert last night, on the musical theme of ‘Land, Sea and Air’.

The performance took place in the beautiful surroundings of Wolverton’s St George’s Church and attracted around 90 people.

Admission was free and the concert included favourites featuring places from across the world, such as:

  • ‘Stranger on the shore’ (Acker Bilk) – duet by Steve Hill and Shirley Ludlow.
  • ‘Ferry cross the Mersey’ (Gerry and the Pacemakers).
  • ‘By the time I get to Phoenix’ (Glen Campbell).
  • ‘Take the A train’ (Duke Ellington).

The event included a number of solo and duet performances and the band’s newest and youngest members (as young as eight) also took part in their first ever public performance.

The evening finished with a rousing version of ‘Rule Britannia’ led by one of the band’s youngest members, Casey Brockwell, who distributed flags among the audience and encouraged a session of flag-waving.

APPLE ORCHARD - EASTER EGG HUNT

It was a chilly day but the weather didn't hamper a great local community event. Lots of colourful entertainment and things to do.

CHARITY CHEQUE PRESENTATION

18 February. Recently, a cheque for £170 was presented to Crystal Brockwell for Mind (the mental health charity) - in memory of her brother, Jamie Brockwell.

The money was raised at two of our concerts in 2014, the most recent being the Christmas charity concert and sing-along in Wolverton’s St George’s Church in December.

The presentation also included Casey Brockwell (band member and brother of both Jamie and Crystal) and Debbie Walker (band member and mother of Jamie, Crystal and Casey). Casey is our youngest member (12 years old). He made his concert debut at the Christmas concert on drums and percussion having moved from cornet and taken up drums just six weeks previously.

The two concerts also raised money for The Suki Woodland Memorial Trust.
